The sun may shine all year, but it's far more damaging during spring and summer. UVA rays penetrate cloud cover and destroy skin's collagen and elastin fibres. Leading to saggy skin and wrinkles. Other rays are just as harmful. Visible light and infrared rays cause an upsurge in free radicals that oxidise proteins in our skin. Skin cells malfunction and can't renew themselves, leaving us with dry, dull complexions. And age spots galore! To add fuel to the fire, as soon as the weather warms up, our skin produces blemish-causing sebum. Throw in pollution and our increasingly sensitive skin has a hard time defending itself against summer rays. Something often referred to as 'photo pollution'.
Slather on the sunscreen
Applying a sunscreen is a non-negotiable flawless skin rule. Some day creams contain a filter, if not you can always apply a sunscreen after your moisturiser or serum. Go for a soothing, moisturising anti ageing and antioxidant-rich broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against long-wave UVA and, most importantly, short-wave UVB rays. Some sunscreens protect against pollution, by preventing toxins from sticking to the epidermis and oxidising skin.
Avoid smog skin
There's no point in applying SPF and anti-pollution creams if our skin isn't religiously cleansed. Cleansing removes traces of make up, pollutants and encrusted sunscreens. Squeaky clean skin can better breathe and regenerate after a day facing the elements. So cleanse morning and night, not forgetting your neck and cleavage, which also bear the brunt of everyday life. For a fresh, dewy, blackhead and blemish-free complexion, apply a face scrub at least once a week, to remove dead skin cells and clean out your pores. If the sun or pollution has left your skin feeling sensitive , treat it to a soothing, hydrating face mask. And if age spots crop up, apply a lightening serum under your sunscreen/day cream and night cream. Don't forget to pamper your eye area!
Heat can make our skin greasy and shiny. Go for light, fluid, watery textures - liquid care (AKA cosmetic water) is perfect. Our suggestions? Cosmetic water, liquid treatments, evanescent serums and gels that pump skin full of moisture without leaving a greasy glare. These treatments often contain hyaluronic acid and plumping active ingredients. Plus they leave our skin feeling gorgeously fresh! These imports were first conceived to combat hot, polluted Asian climates... Climates similar to sultry UK summers!
