Lipofilling: the rejuvenating jab

Cosmetic surgery: lipofilling for a youthful look

They may not admit it, but numerous celebrities are flocking to salons for lipofilling sessions in their quest to preserve their youthful looks. For those not in the know, it's basically a fat transfer technique, used to add volume to different parts of the body.

Loss of volume, an ageing fact

Wrinkles and sagging skin aren't the only signs of ageing. Over time, our faces lose volume, leading to hollow cheeks and sunken eyes. Why? Because with age, hyaluronic acid production slows, meaning our skin can no longer retain enough water to keep itself plump. At the same time, collagen (a protein found primarily in the dermis) gradually loses its ability to support skin, leaving it to slump. Loss of volume means our faces lose definition. Our jowls sink, our skin becomes furrowed, our cheeks hollow, our lips thin and the corners of our mouths turn south.

What does lipofilling involve?

Lipofilling is a minimally invasive technique whereby fat from parts of the body is injected into other zones. Otherwise known as liposculpture or lipomodelling, excess fat is removed from areas such as the stomach, hips or buttocks and re-injected into subcutaneous areas that lack volume. It can be injected into breast, buttock, arm and facial tissue. The pros? This technique uses our own body fat, so there's less risk of it being rejected. Added extra? Not only does it provide volume, but stems cells in the fat used help to improve the overall quality of our skin.

Lipofilling for a youthful look

Ageing skin isn't just about lack of firmness. As we age, we lose subcutaneous fat, with an ensuing loss of volume. Face lifts won't necessarily solve the problem. Lipofilling can replace this lost fat - temples, under the eyes, tear troughs, cheekbones, jowls and nasolabial folds... The fat is injected deep into the skin, so that our features aren't left looking heavy. It can also be injected into superficial layers to fill wrinkles, blur blemishes and thicken facial skin.

The procedure

Lipofilling requires a local or general anaesthetic and involves three stages: fat is taken from fatty deposits, sterilised by high-speed centrifugation and injected into the zone to be treated with a micro-cannula. After care depends on how much fat has been transferred - there may be some swelling or bruising for a week or so. Lipofilling works instantly, although you'll need to wait a month to see the final result.
